The bags contain treasures for the pickers that come through the street to reap the off-casts, selling their finds on eBay. Buyers place value on this “trash” for reasons we cannot be certain of but have heard they are “used to decorate personal closets, framed as art, placed into homes for sale for show, collected, or used for counterfeiting.” We have infiltrated this behind-the-scenes market culture by participating in trash picking on six days over the past month; acquiring interesting, luxury goods; meeting key characters in the scene; listing our items online; and actually making sales to our [mysterious] buyers. Here are our findings.
