HOUSE FOR AN ATMOSPHERIC SCIENTIST // Comprehensive // Ithaca, NY Summer Studio VII // Peter Ballman This linear house protrudes out of a hill towards its counterpart, the existing Cornell Combined Heat & Power Plant. It is designed for an atmospheric scientist working on clean energy and climate change initiatives at Cornell University. The roof contains weather station equipment which must be positioned above the tree line, thus the house is elevated above its landscape. Interior spaces are lit by skylights and grow more private as one proceeds through the house, eventually reaching a courtyard splitting the living space from the data collection office. An outdoor viewing platform is accessible below the office via an perforated metal enclosed stair. The house is relatively small to mitigate its energy consumption (1400 sq ft) and barely touches the ground so as to not effect the nearby stream ecosystem.
